I also cube in-geom instead of furnace, choose the passive that regenerates mana after using a spirit spell und fill my bar with spirit walk, mass confusion and soul harvest with the runspeed-rune. When I'm doing this on my witch doctor, I am not going for a chicken build, but I rather use a normal Helltooth setup with the acid rain rune for bigger AoE. Now, choosing a spec for this isn't just going for uber-runspeed.
You also need a spec that fits the job and one guy should teleport to town as soon as the guardian spawns.
Also you can spread out better on open maps but doing it in a group of two where one guy is the "leecher", that aspect isn't that important. You need a good, open map (although I also had success in well populated cathedral and these fiery act 5 lava-bridge levels that everybody hates), simply because they can contain just way more elites than other maps. Most of the key stuff was already mentioned. Doing this as a group of two is actually not too bad, since the guy receiving the achievement can be assigned to picking up the progression globes, while I can go on and kill stuff.
